The Hearst wilderness area is known as the "moose capital of Ontario"-
with access to the heaviest concentrations of moose in the province.
Moose Hunting Outfitters
The area is noted for its excellent hunting, depending on the amount of effort a hunter extends to reach quiet, isolated areas away from other moose hunters and populated centers. Our guests have a choice of hunting; by driving road systems; hundreds of miles of logging roads and trails, or boating river systems and lakes.
The largest of the deer family, these regal animals often weigh in excess of 1,000 lbs. Hunting the noble moose - the undisputed king of the northern forest, is a thrill of a lifetime.
Before you arrive at Forde Lake Camp for your moose hunt, we’ll communicate with you and go over area maps. Should you desire, a guide can be arranged and ride out with you to help locate and check out the most productive areas where moose have been “hanging”.
Your moose hunt is non-guided; so we recommend that you travel in pairs. Plan accordingly for the unexpected, stuck in the mud, etc… The “hot” spots are going to be off the main roads and deep into the wilderness.
Now you have to get the animal out of the bush! Be prepared, our knowledge of the area and experience will greatly benefit you in your hunt.
Forde Lake Camp is physically situated in WMU 22 for moose hunting; Area 24 is directly across the highway from our camp, and Area 21B is on the west side of Highway 631.
A hunting license from your home state is required to get a moose license in Ontario. Hunter orange clothing is also required – camouflage orange is not acceptable in Ontario. Please review the additional trip information link for additional notes.
If you have a boat, canoe or ATV of any description, or access to this equipment, bring it with you. These items will come in handy for getting further back on the roads and trails. They also help reduce the work at getting your moose out after your kill.
Remember, Ontario law requires registrations and insurance from your home state, along with a helmet. If boating, the new regulations require that you have specific items on board.
Please double-check the current requirements to avoid any problems with John Law or Smoky Bear.
We offer Ontario residents a warm, clean cabin – heat, electricity, and are fully equipped for light housekeeping. The camp accommodates 4 to 6 people comfortably.
We are here for you. And because we’ve had over 46 years to back it up, we know about the moose in our area. Please don’t hesitate to ask for directions on where/how to hunt for them.
Many of our guests have utilized various methods to access the many lakes and river systems around us. There are many miles to cover.
